Jeanette Lockerbie [Author Spotlight]

I hope you have heard of the book Salt in my Kitchen by Jeanette Lockerbie. It is a small devotional book written by Mrs. Lockerbie and is such a neat book to have around.

Jeanette Lockerbie was born in Scotland and spent her adult years in Canada and the United States. She has written nearly forty books, among them short and sweet (and small) devotional books. One of the selling points to me is the size of the book. They are about the size of a postcard and not even an inch thick. They are very approachable books. No deep theology that is hard to understand. She writes about day to day life and brings a scripture for every essay. You feel like she understands your life and the things she has to say come back to you during the day to encourage or even reprove. Mrs. Lockerbie was a pastor’s wife and the mother of two children. She was born in 1916 and passed away in 1998.

Take salt out of the kitchen, and what will be the effect? The finest culinary creations will be tasteless. Eating will be robbed of most of its pleasure.

The Bible calls Christians the “salt of the earth” and warns against losing out “savour” that seasons the world. We should allow this spiritual “salt” to season our conversation and back up our Christian testimony.

Can you think of any better place to sprinkle this “salt” than your own kitchen? Or any better time than right now?

Salt in my Kitchen

Jeanette Lockerbie has other small devotionals some of which I have. We went to Weston’s grandparents sale awhile back and I was pleased to see some of these books for sale there. I remembered them from when I was small, I’m guessing my mom liked her approachable writing as well as I do. Needless to say, I snapped them up and I have been enjoying them ever since. I did a quick search and you can buy them new or from used sites like abebooks or thriftbooks.

Have you read any of these books? Do you read devotional books? I am pretty selective what I read for devotions – no modern day women preachers for me -. Jeanette Lockerbie doesn’t have that feel at all. She seems down to earth and like she is writing for the joy of sharing what she has learned. What do you read for devotions? Tell us in the comments. Everyone can use new inspiration!

  1. I’m trying the book this year Jesus Calling. I have the small padded cover. A lady I clean for has a lot of the same devotionals I do. She got Jesus. Calling

  2. I want to look for these books!

The book ‘Twelve Extraordinary Women’ by John McArthur isn’t necessarily a devotional book but I read it for that and I loved it.
