Lessons From a Princess

Catherine, Princess of Wales, has appeared on many ‘best-dressed’ lists. Does she have something to teach us?

Here are some observations.

A princess wears what the occasion calls for. She is traditional and appropriate. She wears formal clothes in the evening, pretty dresses to a garden party, hats in the day, jewels at night and black is reserved for funerals. She dresses within the bounds of royal expectations and parameters. It seems she always errs on the side of more formality rather than less.

In the royal family, modesty is synonymous with elegance. This usually means a moderate neckline and hem below the knee. There are no bare legs – either tights or nude hosiery are standard.

Most of Catherine’s clothes are made from silk or wool. She goes through her day without a wrinkle.

She is always ladylike. It’s part of the charm, no matter what she’s wearing. Smiles are her main accessory. She slants her legs to the side while sitting, looks up while descending stairs and looks into her teacup when sipping. Catherine never takes sides or has a political opinion.

What a princess! It’s her job and she is good at it.

But I don’t have any titles, and likely you don’t either.

Yet, aren’t we daughters of the King of kings? Am I following His royal protocol?

Now they do it for a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. -1 Corinthians 9:25b
